Ordinary Advent Time

Awakened out of sick sleep
on a work day,
I look out the window
fascinated and just watch
the afternoon sun
move light around
the sailing clouds
in a sea of sky
that turns from
grey to choppy blue
to golden glowing purple
on an ordinary
Advent day
when bare branches
click praise together
in wailing wind.

I was too sick
to go in today,
so my office
is merely to witness
and testify
to this background
of grace
in which we live and move
and have our being--
a glorious truth
we often fail to see
except when we watch
and pray
and join the praise--
not a bad day’s work
after all.
